How Can Fatty Liver Progress To Liver Cancer | Dr Joy Varghese | Gleneagles Global Health City
05/12/2022
Liver cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the world, particularly in India. Watch this video by Dr Joy Varghese, Director in Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai to know how fatty liver can progress to liver cancer.
As per the cases at Gleneagles Global Health City, we saw almost 140 liver cancer patients in the last year. Surprisingly, for two-third of the individuals, fatty liver is the reason for liver cancer. Earlier, fatty liver was considered a benign disease but now we have come to know that fatty liver is possible to progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
Liver cancer is seen slightly more in males than the female population but it is mostly cryptogenic. Hence, it is extremely important to go for a routine checkup in the same way as blood pressure and cholesterol levels are checked. One must undergo liver screening through an ultrasound abdomen and liver function test at least once in five years. If any fatty liver changes are detected, please see a Gastroenterologist or Hepatologist at the earliest.
