Gleneagles Global Health City Becomes The First Hospital In South India To Treat A Man Suffering From Trachea Oesophageal Fistula

~ GGHC becomes the first hospital to place an ASD close device to close the gap between the Trachea and Oesophagus

Chennai, 6th July 2022: Doctors at Gleneagles Global Health City (GGHC), a leading tertiary care hospital in Chennai, successfully treated a patient suffering from Trachea Oesophageal Fistula by placing an ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) closure device to bridge the opening between the Trachea and Oesophagus.

A 45-year-old man, hailing from Chennai, was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer and was unable to eat or drink anything as the disease had obstructed the airway. Therefore, as a temporary solution, a nasogastric tube, running from the nostril into the stomach, was inserted to get food into his system. In addition to this, he was administered radiotherapy which resulted in ‘Tracheo Oesophageal fistula’. This resulted in the patient losing weight, drastically, as his health also deteriorated.

He was referred to GGHC where the doctors conducted Gastrointestinal endoscopy and the results revealed a large opening created between the Oesophagus and the trachea. The patient’s exposure to radiotherapy worsened the situation as the area around the large opening was fragile.

The team of doctors handling this highly complex case comprised Dr. B. Mahadevan, Senior Consultant & Head, Dr Vishnu, Consultant, Dept. of Medical Gastroenterology and Dr. Gobu, Senior Consultant & Head – Dept. of Cardiology.

Elaborating on the case, Dr. Mahadevan, Senior Consultant & Head, Dept. of Medical Gastroenterology, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai said, “An ASD device is an interventional procedure that is used to close a defect or an opening between the right and left sides of the heart. For the very first time, we used this device to close the opening between the oesophagus and trachea of the patient. This enabled the patient to swallow food easily through his mouth.”

Congratulating the team on the success of the case, Dr. Alok Khullar, CEO, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, said, “We will continue to advance our capabilities and pioneer therapeutic approaches that will help us deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients. I applaud the entire GGHC team for pioneering this successful procedure.”
