Gleneagles Global Health City Successfully Treats Large Leiomyoma Tumour Through Endoscopy

Chennai, 28th September 2022: Doctors at Gleneagles Global Health City (GGHC), a leading multi-speciality quaternary hospital in Chennai, successfully treated a patient suffering from Leiomyoma Tumour. The tumour, measuring 8.5 x 3 cm, was the first of its kind to be treated using endoscopy.

A 54-year-old man, from Chennai, was diagnosed with a benign tumour called Leiomyoma which was arising from the oesophagal wall. The patient was unable to eat and suffered indigestion as the tumour was compressing the airway and vessels in the thoracic cavity. With EUS guided biopsy and CT scan, it was observed that the tumour was measuring 8.5x 3 cm. He was diagnosed with this tumour on 25th July 2022 and the tumour removal procedure went on for 6 hours. Removing a tumour of this size using an endoscopic method is rare and has the benefit of very low operative morbidity.

Elaborating on the case, Dr. Vishnu A Raju, Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology and Therapeutic Endoscopy, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai said, “This tumour was larger than 5 cm in diameter, which is extremely unusual. This type of surgery is typically performed through an open or thoracoscopic approach, with a prolonged recovery period. We performed an endoscopic surgery to remove the tumour while closing the food pipe with clips. The tumour was dissected using a unique technique called Per Oral Endoscopic Tunnelling and Tumour Resection. With this technique, the patient recovered faster and was free of symptoms. This is the first time something like this has occurred in Chennai. The patient condition is stable ever since the procedure has been performed and he is able to perform his day-to-day chores”.
