Our Advanced Diagnostic and Assessment Capabilities For Lung Failure
What are the symptoms of end stage lung failure?
- Shortness of
breath: Feeling that you
cannot get enough air, which may get worse.
- Fatigue: Feeling easily tired.
- Fast breathing: Rapid breathing sounds.
- Confusion: Feeling confused; due to high levels of carbon
dioxide in your bloodstream.
How is end stage lung failure diagnosed?
Most of the cases of cystic fibrosis are detected
immediately after the child’s birth using the newborn blood spot test. Tests
are also conducted during pregnancy to check if cystic fibrosis is present in
the fetus.
If your doctor suspects cystic fibrosis, then a
sweat test is ordered. If the test result is positive, it indicates that excess
levels of salt are present in the sweat compared to the normal. Thus, further
tests are conducted on this basis and include one or more of the below:
- Chest X-ray – Creates pictures of the structures in the
chest Scarring in the lungs can be detected
- Breathing test
(Spirometry) – To check the
breathing ability of the lungs and detect the extent of lung damage
- Blood tests – To detect the oxygen levels and signs of
infection
- CT (Computerized
Tomography) scan – Provides
sharper and more detailed pictures of the lungs Detects the extent of lung
damage
- Lung biopsy – Examines the lung tissue under a microscope.
It is the best way to diagnose pulmonary fibrosis. Shows the extent of lung
damage
- Exercise test – To check the purification of the blood by the
lungs
What is the treatment for end stage lung failure?
Medicines: Several medications are available for treating
pulmonary fibrosis. The choice of the drug depends on your overall health.
- Corticosteroids:
These drugs are prescribed to most of the patients to reduce inflammation.
- Immunosuppressants:
Immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclosporine and methotrexate may be given to
some people in combination with cyclosporine.
- Removing the
lymph nodes, if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes of the neck
- Acetylcysteine
and prednisone: This combination can slow down the disease progression in some
people.
Pulmonary rehabilitation
This program involves teaching about the lung exercises, lung diseases, management, support, and counseling.

Treatment & Procedure For Lung Transplants?
What is a Lung Transplant and when do you need one?
Lung transplantation, or pulmonary transplantation, is a surgical procedure in which a patient’s diseased lungs are partially or replaced by lungs that come from a donor. Donor lungs can be retrieved from a living donor or a deceased donor. A living donor can only donate one lung lobe.
Most people with severe, end-stage lung disease can be considered for a lung transplant. The procedure should be considered when someone seems likely to die without the surgery and no other options are available. A lung transplant can also be considered in people whose lung disease is so severe that they can no longer enjoy life.
The most common lung diseases for which people undergo lung transplant are:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema and chronic bronchitis)
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension
What are the Indications for Single-Lung Transplantation?
The indications that are currently accepted for single lung transplantation are the following: pulmonary fibrosis; emphysema; primary pulmonary hypertension; and Eisenmenger’s syndrome.
What are the Indications for a combined Heart-Lung Transplantation?
The main indication of HLTx is congenital heart disease (CHD), followed by acquired heart disease combined with pulmonary hypertension and/or intrinsic lung disease.
Who is eligible for lung transplant?
In general, you must be physiologically 60 years of age or less for bilateral lung transplantation and 65 years of age or less for single lung transplantation. This means that your physical condition must at least meet the typical condition of someone 60 years old or younger, or someone 65 years old or younger.
What is the Lung Allocation Score System?
The lung allocation score (LAS) is a numerical value used by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to assign relative priority for distributing donated lungs for transplantation within the United States. The lung allocation score takes into account various measures of a patient’s health in order to direct donated organs towards the patients who would best benefit from a lung transplant. The LAS system replaces the older method within the United States of allocating donated lungs strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, according to blood type compatibility and distance from the donor hospital. The older method is still used for patients under the age of 12. The LAS system is still being evaluated and revised. The reason for this continuing analysis is the need to balance on one hand the desire to help those patients in direct need, versus the statistical likelihood of the patient to survive the procedure, as well as the post-operative risks of infection and transplant rejection.
How long do you have to wait for a lung transplant?
It is impossible to predict how long a wait there will be before a lung becomes available. The average wait is about three to six months for patients with IPF or certain diseases; however, it’s possible the wait could be from a few days to many years depending on your LAS and your disease.
Where do the lung donors come from?
Most lungs that are transplanted come from deceased organ donors. This type of transplant is called a cadaveric transplant. Healthy, nonsmoking adults who are a good match may be able to donate part of one of their lungs. The part of the lung is called a lobe.
What happens during the Lung Transplant Surgery?
During a lung transplant, surgeons remove your diseased lungs, one at a time, and then attach the donor lungs to your airways and to the blood vessels that lead to and from your heart.
What happens after the Lung Transplant Surgery?
Immediately after the Lung Transplant surgery, you’ll spend several days in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). A mechanical ventilator will help you breathe for a few days, and tubes in your chest will drain fluids from around your lungs and heart.
