Gastric Bypass or Roux-en-Y
What is Gastric Bypass?
Gastric Bypass is the most common procedure. In this procedure, a small pouch is created at the top of the stomach. The surgeon then cuts a portion of the small intestine, and it is connected to the pouch at the top of the stomach. Food and liquid bypass the stomach and flow directly to the intestine, hence the name gastric bypass.
What are the side effects of Gastric Bypass?
The side effects of gastric bypass surgery are
- Acid reflux
- Chronic nausea and vomiting
- Obstruction of stomach
- Infection
- Inability to eat certain foods.
However, this is not worrying as the success rate of gastric bypass surgery is approximately a loss of half to two-thirds of the excess weight within one to two years of the procedure.
